<p>Japanese sentence structure is the first thing that feels genuinely foreign. The verb arrives last, the subject often disappears, and small words do the work that English handles with order. However, the system is consistent, so it becomes comfortable quickly.</p>
<p>This guide walks through the pattern step by step, from the simplest sentence to modified clauses.</p>

<h2>The verb goes last</h2>
<p>Japanese follows subject, object, verb order. Because the verb closes the sentence, you must listen to the end before the meaning is complete.</p>
<p>For example, <em>watashi wa sushi o tabemasu</em> is literally "I sushi eat". The verb is the last word, and it carries the tense and the politeness.</p>

<h2>Topic first, comment second</h2>
<p>Many sentences set a topic with <em>wa</em>, then say something about it. This is the topic and comment pattern, and it shapes most natural Japanese.</p>
<p>For instance, <em>kyou wa samui desu</em> means "as for today, it is cold". The topic frames everything that follows, although it is not always the grammatical subject.</p>

<h2>Anything obvious gets dropped</h2>
<p>Japanese omits whatever the listener already knows. Consequently, a complete sentence can be a single verb.</p>
<p>If someone asks what you are doing, <em>tabemasu</em> alone is a full answer. English would require "I am eating". This is why Japanese sentence structure often looks shorter than the translation.</p>

<h2>Particles carry the roles</h2>

<h2>Modifiers come before what they modify</h2>
<p>This rule is simple and it never breaks. Adjectives sit before nouns. Whole clauses do the same.</p>
<p>For example, <em>kinou katta hon</em> means "the book I bought yesterday". English puts the clause after the noun, whereas Japanese puts it in front. Therefore long descriptions build up before the noun rather than after it.</p>

<h2>Questions keep the same order</h2>
<p>You do not reorder anything to ask a question. Add <em>ka</em> at the end instead. As a result, <em>tabemasu ka</em> is simply "do you eat?".</p>
<p>Question words also stay in place. <em>Nani o tabemasu ka</em> keeps the object slot where it already was.</p>

<h2>Practising Japanese sentence structure</h2>
<p>Translation drills work well here, provided you translate into Japanese rather than out of it. Start from an English sentence, then build the Japanese from the end backwards.</p>

<li>Add the object with <em>o</em>.</li>
<li>Add the topic with <em>wa</em>.</li>
<li>Add time and place at the front.</li>
