Hiragana practice is the fastest doorway into real Japanese reading: learn the 46 basic characters, read simple words aloud, then connect kana to particles, verbs, and short sentences. If you practise a little every day, hiragana stops being a chart and becomes a reading habit.

Hiragana is a Japanese phonetic writing system used for native words, grammar endings, particles, and words without kanji. Modern hiragana has 46 basic characters, plus voiced sounds such as が・ざ・だ・ば, semi-voiced sounds such as ぱ, and combination sounds such as きゃ・しゅ・ちょ. A practical first goal is simple: recognise all basic hiragana, write them from memory, and read short sentences without romaji.

Sensei Owl’s gentle warning: do not treat hiragana as a decorative alphabet. It is not only for beginners. Even advanced learners meet hiragana constantly in verb endings, particles, children’s books, furigana, signs, manga, and JLPT reading passages. Good hiragana practice supports pronunciation, grammar, listening, and reading speed all at once.

<h2>Why Hiragana Practice Matters Before Grammar Gets Difficult</h2>

Japanese grammar is built from small, meaningful pieces. Many of those pieces are written in hiragana: particles such as は, が, を, に, で; verb endings such as ます, ない, た; and adjective endings such as い, かった, くない. If kana recognition is slow, grammar feels harder than it really is.

For example, look at this simple sentence:

<ruby>私<rt>わたし</rt></ruby>は<ruby>水<rt>みず</rt></ruby>を<ruby>飲<rt>の</rt></ruby>みます。 Watashi wa mizu o nomimasu. “I drink water.”

The kanji are useful, but the grammar lives mostly in hiragana: は marks the topic, を marks the object, and みます shows the polite present form of the verb. If you are still sounding out each kana painfully, you may miss the sentence structure. For a deeper explanation of how word order works, see Yuzunihon’s guide to <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/understanding-japanese-sentence-structure">Japanese sentence structure</a>. For the particle side, review <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-particles">Japanese particles explained</a> and the common confusion between <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/japanese-particles-wa-and-ga">は and が</a>.

A quote-worthy fact for your study plan: if you can read the 46 basic hiragana automatically, you remove one major obstacle from every JLPT N5 grammar question, every beginner reading passage, and every vocabulary card you study afterward.

<h2>Hiragana Practice: The 5-Step Method Sensei Owl Recommends</h2>

Many learners begin with a kana chart and simply stare at it. That is understandable, but passive looking is weak practice. Strong hiragana practice moves through five stages: sound, shape, writing, reading, and grammar use.

<ol>
 <li>Say the sound clearly. Read あ as a, い as i, う as u, え as e, お as o. Avoid adding English-style extra sounds.</li>
 <li>Notice the shape. Compare similar kana: さ and き, ぬ and め, れ and わ, は and ほ.</li>
 <li>Write from memory. Stroke order helps your hand remember the character. Do not only type.</li>
 <li>Read real words. Move quickly from isolated kana to words like ねこ, すし, あめ, いえ.</li>
 <li>Read short sentences. Add particles and verbs so hiragana becomes grammar, not just symbols.</li>
</ol>

If you need the broader kana picture, including katakana, Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-kana">Japanese kana guide</a> explains how hiragana and katakana fit together. Hiragana usually appears earlier in study because it carries so much grammar information.

<h2>What Should You Practise First?</h2>

Begin with the five vowel sounds, then learn kana in rows: あいうえお, かきくけこ, さしすせそ, and so on. This order is useful because Japanese dictionaries, textbooks, and many kana charts follow the same sound pattern. One calm row per study session is better than trying to swallow all 46 characters in one sitting.

Here is a beginner-friendly order for hiragana practice:

<ul>
 <li>Day 1: あ・い・う・え・お and five words: あお, いえ, うえ, え, おい</li>
 <li>Day 2: か・き・く・け・こ and words: かき, ここ, きく, こえ</li>
 <li>Day 3: さ・し・す・せ・そ and words: すし, そこ, しお, せき</li>
 <li>Day 4: た・ち・つ・て・と and words: つき, とけい, ちかてつ</li>
 <li>Day 5: な・に・ぬ・ね・の and words: ねこ, なに, ぬの, のみもの</li>
</ul>

When you practise, read aloud. Japanese pronunciation is relatively consistent compared with English spelling: か is usually ka, き is ki, and こ is ko. However, learners often misread し as “see” instead of shi, ち as “tee” instead of chi, and つ as a sound that has no exact English equivalent. Slow mouth practice matters.

<h2>Mini Reading Exercises for Hiragana Practice</h2>

Now, let us move from single kana to meaningful reading. Read each line first without looking at the romaji. Then check the romaji and meaning. Finally, read again in Japanese. This three-pass method builds recognition without making you dependent on roman letters.

<h3>Exercise 1: Simple Words</h3>

<ul>
 <li>ねこ — neko — cat</li>
 <li>いぬ — inu — dog</li>
 <li>みず — mizu — water</li>
 <li>やま — yama — mountain</li>
 <li>そら — sora — sky</li>
</ul>

<h3>Exercise 2: Short Phrases</h3>

あおいそら aoi sora blue sky

おいしいみず oishii mizu delicious water

ちいさいねこ chiisai neko small cat

Notice that adjectives such as あおい, おいしい, and ちいさい end in い. This is not an accident; い-adjectives are an important beginner grammar point. When you are ready, study the difference between い-adjectives and な-adjectives in Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-adjectives">Japanese adjectives guide</a>.

<h3>Exercise 3: Short Sentences with Furigana</h3>

<ruby>猫<rt>ねこ</rt></ruby>がいます。 Neko ga imasu. There is a cat.

<ruby>水<rt>みず</rt></ruby>をのみます。 Mizu o nomimasu. I drink water.

<ruby>本<rt>ほん</rt></ruby>をよみます。 Hon o yomimasu. I read a book.

These sentences are useful because they combine hiragana practice with grammar practice. が marks the subject or existence focus, を marks the direct object, and ます shows polite style. If you want to connect kana reading with verbs, review <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-verbs">Japanese verbs</a> and the more detailed <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/japanese-verb-conjugation-guide">Japanese verb conjugation guide</a>.

<h2>How Can You Use Quizzes Without Guessing?</h2>

Quizzes are excellent for hiragana practice, but only if you use them thoughtfully. The common mistake is to click quickly, feel happy about a high score, and then forget the characters tomorrow. A better quiz routine has three parts: predict, answer, and repair.

<ol>
 <li>Predict: Before seeing choices, say the kana sound aloud.</li>
 <li>Answer: Choose the reading or write the kana from memory.</li>
 <li>Repair: For every mistake, write one word using that kana three times.</li>
</ol>

For example, if you confuse め and ぬ, do not simply say, “I got it wrong.” Repair the mistake with contrast practice:

<ul>
 <li>め — me — eye</li>
 <li>ぬの — nuno — cloth</li>
 <li>あめ — ame — rain / candy, depending on pitch and context</li>
 <li>いぬ — inu — dog</li>
</ul>

Short quizzes also prepare you for longer grammar work. Once kana recognition is smoother, try Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/quizzes">Japanese grammar quizzes</a> and beginner JLPT practice. For a broader first-level exam path, the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/jlpt-prep/jlpt-n5-grammar-guide-for-beginners">JLPT N5 grammar guide</a> and <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-n5-practice-test">JLPT N5 practice test</a> are natural next steps.

<h2>Hiragana Practice for JLPT Reading</h2>

The JLPT does not test hiragana as an isolated art skill; it tests whether you can use Japanese. That includes reading instructions, vocabulary, particles, verb endings, and short passages. At N5 and N4, many important grammar forms appear in hiragana. At N3 and above, hiragana remains essential for endings, connectors, and words usually written without kanji.

Here are 3 concrete study facts to remember:

<ul>
 <li>There are 46 basic hiragana in the standard modern chart.</li>
 <li>Japanese also uses 2 other major scripts: katakana and kanji.</li>
 <li>A focused 10-minute daily kana review is usually more effective than one long weekly session because recognition depends on repetition.</li>
</ul>

For JLPT learners, combine hiragana practice with reading comprehension as early as possible. A passage of only 4 or 5 sentences can teach kana, vocabulary, particles, and sentence endings together. Yuzunihon has beginner-friendly <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-practice">Japanese reading practice</a>, strategy guidance for <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-skills">improving Japanese reading skills</a>, and <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-comprehension">Japanese reading comprehension exercises</a> for learners who want structured practice.

If your target is the JLPT, remember that kana is not separate from grammar. It is the surface on which grammar appears. For planning, compare your kana and grammar progress with Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-preparation">JLPT preparation guide</a> and <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/jlpt-prep/how-to-prepare-for-the-jlpt-exam">JLPT study plan</a>.

<h2>Common Hiragana Mistakes Learners Make</h2>

Let us correct some common errors calmly. Mistakes are not failure; they are information. The owl sees the pattern, then fixes it.

<h3>1. Depending on Romaji Too Long</h3>

Romaji is useful for checking pronunciation at the beginning, but it can become a crutch. If every sentence must pass through English letters in your head, reading will stay slow. During hiragana practice, cover the romaji first. Use it only after you attempt the kana.

<h3>2. Confusing Similar Shapes</h3>

Some kana look close to each other: さ/き, ぬ/め, れ/わ/ね, は/ほ, る/ろ. Make small contrast sets. Write ぬ next to め and say both aloud. Your goal is not only recognition but instant distinction.

<h3>3. Ignoring Small ゃ・ゅ・ょ</h3>

Small ゃ, ゅ, and ょ combine with kana such as き, し, ち, に, ひ, み, り. For example:

<ul>
 <li>きや = kiya, two sounds</li>
 <li>きゃ = kya, one combined sound</li>
 <li>しゆ = shiyu, two sounds</li>
 <li>しゅ = shu, one combined sound</li>
</ul>

This difference matters in real words. For example, びよういん and びょういん are not the same pattern. Small kana are small, but their grammar and vocabulary consequences are large.

<h3>4. Forgetting the Small っ</h3>

The small っ creates a short pause or doubled consonant. Compare:

きて — kite — come / wear, depending on verb and context きって — kitte — stamp

In listening and speaking, this pause is important. In reading, missing small っ can change the word completely. Include small っ in your hiragana practice from the first month.

<h2>A 7-Day Hiragana Practice Plan</h2>

Here is a simple plan that balances recognition, writing, reading, and grammar. Adjust the pace if needed. Accuracy first, speed second.

<ol>
 <li>Day 1: Learn vowels and k-row. Read 10 simple kana combinations aloud.</li>
 <li>Day 2: Add s-row and t-row. Contrast し, ち, and つ carefully.</li>
 <li>Day 3: Add n-row and h-row. Practise は as ha in words and wa as a topic particle.</li>
 <li>Day 4: Add m-row, y-row, r-row, わ, を, and ん. Read 15 beginner words.</li>
 <li>Day 5: Practise dakuten: が, ざ, だ, ば, and handakuten: ぱ.</li>
 <li>Day 6: Practise small ゃ・ゅ・ょ and small っ with short word pairs.</li>
 <li>Day 7: Read 5 short sentences and mark the particles は, が, を, に, で.</li>
</ol>

On Day 7, use sentences like these:

<ruby>私<rt>わたし</rt></ruby>はがくせいです。 Watashi wa gakusei desu. I am a student.

<ruby>学校<rt>がっこう</rt></ruby>にいきます。 Gakkou ni ikimasu. I go to school.

<ruby>駅<rt>えき</rt></ruby>でともだちにあいます。 Eki de tomodachi ni aimasu. I meet a friend at the station.

These examples show why kana and grammar should not be separated for too long. に marks direction or target, で marks location of an action, and は marks the topic. If particles feel slippery, review <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/how-to-master-japanese-particles">how to master Japanese particles</a> and the list of <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/top-10-japanese-grammar-mistakes">common Japanese grammar mistakes</a>.

<h2>Using Numbers and Everyday Words in Hiragana Practice</h2>

Numbers are helpful because they are short, common, and easy to check. Although numbers are often written with Arabic numerals or kanji, reading them in hiragana strengthens sound recognition. Try these:

<ul>
 <li>いち — ichi — one</li>
 <li>に — ni — two</li>
 <li>さん — san — three</li>
 <li>よん / し — yon / shi — four</li>
 <li>ご — go — five</li>
</ul>

Then place numbers into small grammar patterns:

りんごが<ruby>三<rt>さん</rt></ruby>こあります。 Ringo ga san-ko arimasu. There are three apples.

Here, さん is a number and こ is a counter. Counters are a famous Japanese difficulty, but they become less frightening when kana reading is automatic. For more practice, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers-1-through-10">Japanese numbers 1 through 10</a>, <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/counting-in-japanese">counting in Japanese</a>, and <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-counters">Japanese counters made simple</a>.

<h2>How Do You Know Your Hiragana Practice Is Working?</h2>

You know your hiragana practice is working when you stop translating each character one by one and begin seeing word chunks. At first, た・べ・ま・す feels like four separate symbols. Later, たべます appears as one familiar verb form meaning “eat” in polite style.

Use these checks:

<ul>
 <li>You can write all 46 basic hiragana from memory.</li>
 <li>You can read a simple 5-sentence beginner passage aloud without stopping at every character.</li>
 <li>You can identify common particles: は, が, を, に, で, と, も.</li>
 <li>You can notice small っ and small ゃ・ゅ・ょ while reading.</li>
 <li>You can read kana words inside grammar examples without needing romaji first.</li>
</ul>

If you are building a wider study routine, connect kana with short daily sessions. Yuzunihon’s guide to a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/daily-japanese-study-routine">daily Japanese study routine</a> and advice on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-to-use-japanese-flashcards-effectively">using Japanese flashcards effectively</a> can help you structure repetition without becoming scattered. If you wonder about the larger timeline, read <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-long-to-learn-japanese">how long it takes to learn Japanese</a> with realistic expectations.

<h2>Final Takeaways from Sensei Owl</h2>

Hiragana practice is not merely memorising a chart; it is training your eyes, mouth, hand, and grammar mind to work together. Start with the 46 basic characters, review confusing shapes deliberately, read aloud every day, and move into short sentences as soon as possible.

Keep these final principles close:

<ul>
 <li>Read before romaji: Let kana be the main text, not the decoration.</li>
 <li>Practise in words: ねこ, みず, and よみます are more memorable than isolated symbols.</li>
 <li>Connect to grammar: Particles and verb endings are written in hiragana, so kana fluency supports sentence understanding.</li>
 <li>Review lightly but often: Ten calm minutes daily can build steadier recognition than irregular cramming.</li>
 <li>Notice mistakes kindly: Confusion between ぬ and め, or は and ほ, is normal. Contrast, repeat, and continue.</li>
</ul>

Step by step, the page becomes less mysterious. First you read kana, then words, then sentences, then stories. That is the quiet power of consistent hiragana practice.

Hiragana Practice: Exercises and Quizzes to Master Japanese Kana

<img src="https://blogify.tobu.fyi/api/media/covers/90a7427f-a860-4258-afb4-a2c38fe494ec.jpg" alt="">
Japanese numbers 1 through 10 are the foundation for prices, dates, ages, counters, phone numbers, and JLPT N5 listening. Learn both ichi, ni, san and hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu, because Japanese uses two number systems in different real-life situations.

Japanese numbers 1 through 10 are a set of basic counting words used to express quantity, order, age, time, money, and counted objects in Japanese. Sensei Owl’s first advice: do not simply memorize a list. Learn the sound, the kanji, the hiragana, and the situation where each number is used.

There are 10 basic numbers in this lesson, 2 major counting systems you must recognize, and at least 3 readings that often confuse beginners: よん / し for 4, なな / しち for 7, and きゅう / く for 9. If you are just beginning, this article pairs well with Yuzunihon’s broader guide to <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers">how Japanese numbers work</a> and the beginner roadmap in <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-lessons-for-beginners">Japanese lessons for beginners</a>.

<h2>Japanese Numbers 1 Through 10: Sino-Japanese Readings</h2>

The first system is called the Sino-Japanese system. “Sino” means Chinese-related, because these readings historically came from Chinese. This is the system you will use most often for mathematics, money, phone numbers, many counters, months, and general numerical expressions.

 </tbody>
</table>

For a focused companion lesson on the same beginner topic, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/1-10-japanese-numbers">Japanese Numbers 1-10: Pronunciation, Writing, and Counting Rules</a>. For a wider view beyond 10, the page on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japan-numerals">Japanese numerals from zero onward</a> will help you connect today’s lesson to larger numbers.

<h2>How Do You Pronounce Japanese Numbers 1 Through 10 Correctly?</h2>

Japanese pronunciation is usually steady and rhythmic. Each kana generally receives one beat, called a mora. This matters because きゅう (kyuu) is longer than く (ku), and じゅう (juu) is not a quick “joo” in careful study pronunciation.

<ul>
 <li>いち (ichi) is two beats: i-chi.</li>
 <li>に (ni) is one beat.</li>
 <li>さん (san) has a final ん sound. Do not add an English-style “g.”</li>
 <li>よん (yon) and なな (nana) are often preferred in clear speech because they reduce confusion.</li>
 <li>じゅう (juu) has a long vowel. Hold it slightly longer than じゅ.</li>
</ul>

Let us place the numbers inside simple sentences. Notice the Japanese sentence order: the verb often comes at the end. If this feels new, read Yuzunihon’s guide to <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/understanding-japanese-sentence-structure">Japanese sentence structure and SOV order</a>.

<ruby>一<rt>いち</rt></ruby>、<ruby>二<rt>に</rt></ruby>、<ruby>三<rt>さん</rt></ruby>を<ruby>言<rt>い</rt></ruby>います。
Ichi, ni, san o iimasu.
“I say one, two, three.”

<ruby>電話番号<rt>でんわばんごう</rt></ruby>は<ruby>七<rt>なな</rt></ruby>、<ruby>五<rt>ご</rt></ruby>、<ruby>九<rt>きゅう</rt></ruby>です。
Denwa bangou wa nana, go, kyuu desu.
“The phone number is seven, five, nine.”

In phone numbers, train stations, room numbers, and codes, Japanese numbers 1 through 10 are usually read one digit at a time. In such contexts, なな is often clearer than しち, and よん is often clearer than し.

<h2>Native Japanese Numbers: Hitotsu, Futatsu, Mittsu</h2>

The second system is the native Japanese system. This is especially important when counting general objects from 1 to 10 without a specific counter. Beginners often learn ichi, ni, san first, but in everyday conversation, hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu appear very early.

<table>
 <thead>
 <tr>
 <th>Number</th>
 <th>Kanji + Hiragana</th>
 <th>Romaji</th>
 <th>Use</th>
 </tr>
 </thead>
 <tbody>
 <tr><td>1</td><td>一つ / ひとつ</td><td>hitotsu</td><td>one thing</td></tr>
 <tr><td>2</td><td>二つ / ふたつ</td><td>futatsu</td><td>two things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>3</td><td>三つ / みっつ</td><td>mittsu</td><td>three things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>4</td><td>四つ / よっつ</td><td>yottsu</td><td>four things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>5</td><td>五つ / いつつ</td><td>itsutsu</td><td>five things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>6</td><td>六つ / むっつ</td><td>muttsu</td><td>six things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>7</td><td>七つ / ななつ</td><td>nanatsu</td><td>seven things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>8</td><td>八つ / やっつ</td><td>yattsu</td><td>eight things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>9</td><td>九つ / ここのつ</td><td>kokonotsu</td><td>nine things</td></tr>
 <tr><td>10</td><td>十 / とお</td><td>too</td><td>ten things; less common in modern casual use than じゅう with counters</td></tr>
 </tbody>
</table>

The native forms are extremely useful in shops, restaurants, and simple requests. They work when the object is understood or when you are counting “things” in a general way.

<ruby>これ<rt></rt></ruby>を<ruby>一<rt>ひと</rt></ruby>つください。
Kore o hitotsu kudasai.
“One of these, please.”

<ruby>りんご<rt></rt></ruby>を<ruby>二<rt>ふた</rt></ruby>つ<ruby>買<rt>か</rt></ruby>いました。
Ringo o futatsu kaimashita.
“I bought two apples.”

<ruby>質問<rt>しつもん</rt></ruby>が<ruby>三<rt>みっ</rt></ruby>つあります。
Shitsumon ga mittsu arimasu.
“I have three questions.”

The particle を marks the object in the first two examples, while が marks what exists in the third. If particles feel slippery, Sensei Owl recommends reviewing <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-particles">Japanese particles for JLPT N5 and N4</a>, then deepening the distinction with <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/japanese-particles-wa-and-ga">the difference between は and が</a>.

<h2>What’s the Difference Between Native Japanese and Sino-Japanese Numbers?</h2>

This is the central question for learners studying Japanese numbers 1 through 10. The answer is not “one is formal and one is informal.” Rather, each system has different grammatical jobs.

<ol>
 <li>Use Sino-Japanese numbers for most numbers with counters: 一人, 二本, 三枚, 四時, 五円.</li>
 <li>Use native Japanese numbers for general objects when no specific counter is needed: 一つ, 二つ, 三つ.</li>
 <li>Use set readings for special words such as dates, ages, and people-counting.</li>
</ol>

Here is the important grammar point: Japanese usually does not count nouns by placing a bare number directly before the noun the way English does. English says “three books.” Japanese often says “book + three + counter,” as in 本を三冊. Counters are measure words that classify the thing being counted.

<ruby>本<rt>ほん</rt></ruby>を<ruby>三冊<rt>さんさつ</rt></ruby><ruby>読<rt>よ</rt></ruby>みました。
Hon o san-satsu yomimashita.
“I read three books.”

<ruby>猫<rt>ねこ</rt></ruby>が<ruby>二匹<rt>にひき</rt></ruby>います。
Neko ga ni-hiki imasu.
“There are two cats.”

<ruby>コーヒー<rt></rt></ruby>を<ruby>一杯<rt>いっぱい</rt></ruby><ruby>飲<rt>の</rt></ruby>みました。
Koohii o ippai nomimashita.
“I drank one cup of coffee.”

Notice that 一杯 is pronounced いっぱい, not いちはい. This is why studying Japanese numbers 1 through 10 naturally leads to counters. For a careful list and practice, use Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-counters">Japanese counters guide</a> and the broader lesson on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/counting-in-japanese">counting in Japanese with common mistakes</a>.

<h2>When Should I Use Native Japanese Numbers Versus Sino-Japanese Numbers in Conversation?</h2>

In real conversation, choose by situation. If you are ordering or pointing to objects, native numbers are often natural. If you are saying prices, times, school grades, numbers in an address, or doing arithmetic, Sino-Japanese readings usually appear.

<h3>Use native Japanese numbers for general “things”</h3>

<ruby>チケット<rt></rt></ruby>を<ruby>二<rt>ふた</rt></ruby>つください。
Chiketto o futatsu kudasai.
“Two tickets, please.”

<ruby>おにぎり<rt></rt></ruby>を<ruby>三<rt>みっ</rt></ruby>つ<ruby>食<rt>た</rt></ruby>べました。
Onigiri o mittsu tabemashita.
“I ate three rice balls.”

<h3>Use Sino-Japanese numbers for time, money, and many counters</h3>

<ruby>今<rt>いま</rt></ruby>、<ruby>四時<rt>よじ</rt></ruby>です。
Ima, yo-ji desu.
“It is four o’clock.”

<ruby>百円<rt>ひゃくえん</rt></ruby>が<ruby>五枚<rt>ごまい</rt></ruby>あります。
Hyaku-en ga go-mai arimasu.
“There are five 100-yen coins.”

<ruby>九時<rt>くじ</rt></ruby>に<ruby>会<rt>あ</rt></ruby>いましょう。
Ku-ji ni aimashou.
“Let’s meet at nine o’clock.”

Here, 4 o’clock is よじ, not よんじ, and 9 o’clock is くじ, not きゅうじ. Such fixed readings are one reason Japanese listening practice matters. If you are preparing for early JLPT levels, combine number study with <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/jlpt-prep/jlpt-n5-grammar-guide-for-beginners">JLPT N5 grammar patterns</a> and a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-n5-practice-test">JLPT N5 practice test</a>.

<h2>Common Mistakes with Japanese Numbers 1 Through 10</h2>

Let us slow down and correct the errors Sensei Owl sees most often. These are not signs that you are “bad at Japanese.” They are normal beginner traps caused by English habits.

<ul>
 <li>Mistake 1: Saying し for 4 everywhere. While 四 can be read し, よん is often clearer and more common in counting. However, in 四月, “April,” it is しがつ.</li>
 <li>Mistake 2: Saying しち for 7 in unclear audio situations. しち can sound close to いち to new ears. なな is frequently used for clarity, especially in numbers and codes.</li>
 <li>Mistake 3: Treating counters as optional forever. 一つ and 二つ are useful, but Japanese has many specific counters. You will need them for books, people, animals, flat objects, machines, and more.</li>
 <li>Mistake 4: Forgetting sound changes. 一杯 is いっぱい, 六本 is ろっぽん, 八本 is はっぽん. The spelling and pronunciation can shift.</li>
 <li>Mistake 5: Translating English word order too directly. “Three books read” may sound strange in English, but 本を三冊読みました is normal Japanese structure.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Mini Practice: Read and Choose the Right Number Form</h2>

Try these before looking at the answers. Reading practice strengthens number recognition more than silent list memorization. <li><ruby>今<rt>いま</rt></ruby>、（よじ / よんじ）です。</li>

</ol>

<h3>Answers and Grammar Notes</h3>

<ol>
 <li>ひとつ — When ordering one general item, 一つください is natural.</li>
 <li>よじ — Four o’clock is 四時, read よじ.</li>
 <li>みっつ — For “three questions” in a general count, 三つ is fine: 質問が三つあります.</li>
 <li>なな — Both readings exist, but なな is often clearer in spoken digits.</li>
 <li>さんさつ — Books use the counter 冊, so 三冊 is correct.</li>
</ol>

When you practice, say the full sentence aloud, not only the number. Numbers live inside grammar. The verb あります, the object particle を, and the counter after the number all work together. If you want to review verbs used in examples such as 読みました, 買いました, and 飲みました, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-verbs">Japanese verbs and conjugation basics</a> or the more detailed <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/japanese-verb-conjugation-guide">Japanese verb conjugation guide</a>.

<h2>How to Study Japanese Numbers 1 Through 10 Without Confusion</h2>

Here is a calm, practical study order. Do not try to master every counter on day one. First, make Japanese numbers 1 through 10 automatic in sound and recognition. Then add usage.

<ol>
 <li>Day 1: Memorize いち to じゅう with kanji 一 to 十.</li>
 <li>Day 2: Add native numbers 一つ to 十 and say them aloud.</li>
 <li>Day 3: Practice three ordering sentences: 一つください, 二つください, 三つください.</li>
 <li>Day 4: Learn time expressions such as 一時, 二時, 三時, 四時, 九時.</li>
 <li>Day 5: Add one counter category, such as 冊 for books or 枚 for flat objects.</li>
</ol>

Flashcards can help, but only if each card includes a phrase, not just an isolated number. A good card might show “三冊” on the front and “さんさつ — three bound items/books” on the back. For method, read <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-to-use-japanese-flashcards-effectively">how to use Japanese flashcards effectively</a>. For a sustainable rhythm, connect number review to a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/daily-japanese-study-routine">daily Japanese study routine</a>.

<h2>Key Takeaways</h2>

<ul>
 <li>Japanese numbers 1 through 10 have two important systems: Sino-Japanese readings such as いち, に, さん and native Japanese forms such as ひとつ, ふたつ, みっつ.</li>
 <li>Use Sino-Japanese numbers for most counters, money, time, phone numbers, and larger number patterns.</li>
 <li>Use native Japanese numbers for general objects, especially when saying “one thing,” “two things,” or “three things.”</li>
 <li>Be careful with 4, 7, and 9: よん / し, なな / しち, and きゅう / く depend on context.</li>
 <li>Counters are not decoration; they are part of correct Japanese grammar.</li>
</ul>

If you remember only one principle, let it be this: numbers are small words with large grammatical responsibilities. Learn them in sentences, listen for their context, and Japanese counting will become clearer one careful step at a time.

Japanese Numbers 1-10: Pronunciation, Writing, and Usage Guide

<img src="https://blogify.tobu.fyi/api/media/covers/95f06dd8-ca10-4170-9ba3-4aaf6524a480.jpg" alt="">
Learning counting in Japanese is essential for everyday life—whether you're ordering three coffees at a café, telling someone you have two sisters, or asking how many train stops until your destination. Counting in Japanese uses a two-part system: basic numbers paired with classifiers called counters that change based on what you're counting. This guide walks you through the numbers, the most common counters, and real-world examples so you can count confidently in any situation.

Counting in Japanese means using numbers together with counters—short suffixes that classify objects by their shape, size, or type. Here are three concrete facts: Japanese has over 500 counters in total, though daily conversation relies on about 20 to 30; the JLPT N5 exam requires knowledge of numbers 1–100 and at least seven basic counters; and using the wrong counter can sound as odd as calling a person "three sheets" in English.

<h2>How Does Counting in Japanese Actually Work?</h2>

Japanese numbers from 1 to 10 form the foundation: ichi (1), ni (2), san (3), yon/shi (4), go (5), roku (6), nana/shichi (7), hachi (8), kyuu/ku (9), and juu (10). Once you have these down, larger numbers build by combining them—11 is juu-ichi (ten-one), 20 is ni-juu (two-ten), and so on.

But here's where Japanese differs from English: you can't just say "three" and expect to be understood. You need to attach a counter that tells the listener what kind of thing you're counting. Think of counters as the difference between "three cups of coffee" and "three coffees"—except in Japanese, the counter is mandatory and changes based on the object's characteristics.

For a deeper dive into Japanese numbers including pronunciation, writing in kanji and hiragana, and usage rules, see our guide on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers">Japanese Numbers: How to Read, Write, and Use Them Correctly</a>.

<h2>The Most Common Japanese Counters You Need</h2>

You'll encounter these counters constantly in everyday Japanese:

<ul>
<li>-nin (人) for people: hitori (one person), futari (two people), san-nin (three people). Note that one and two are irregular.</li>
<li>-ko (個) for small, round objects like apples or balls: ikko (one), ni-ko (two), san-ko (three)</li>
<li>-hon/-bon/-pon (本) for long, cylindrical objects like pens, bottles, or umbrellas: ippon (one), ni-hon (two), san-bon (three). The pronunciation shifts for certain numbers.</li>
<li>-mai (枚) for flat, thin items like paper, tickets, or shirts: ichi-mai (one), ni-mai (two), san-mai (three)</li>
<li>-satsu (冊) for bound books and magazines: is-satsu (one), ni-satsu (two), san-satsu (three)</li>
<li>-dai (台) for machines and vehicles like cars, computers, or bicycles: ichi-dai (one), ni-dai (two), san-dai (three)</li>
<li>-hiki/-biki/-piki (匹) for small to medium animals: ippiki (one), ni-hiki (two), san-biki (three)</li>
</ul>

Notice how some counters change their sound depending on the number—this is called rendaku, and it happens to make pronunciation smoother. You'll pick up the patterns naturally with practice.

<h2>Why Do Japanese Counters Exist?</h2>

Counters evolved to make communication precise. When you say san-satsu, the listener immediately knows you're talking about three books, not three people or three sheets of paper. The counter encodes information about the object's shape and category directly into the number.

Many Asian languages use classifier systems, but Japanese takes it further with counters for everything from rabbits (-wa) to floors of a building (-kai) to age (-sai). English does something similar when we say "three head of cattle" or "two pieces of advice," but Japanese applies the principle universally.

Understanding this system also helps you grasp Japanese sentence structure, which typically follows Subject-Object-Verb order. Counters often appear after the object they're quantifying, sometimes with the particle no or directly attached. For more on how particles work with counting, see our guide on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-particles">Japanese Particles Explained: Complete Guide for JLPT N5 and N4 Learners</a>.

<h2>Common Mistakes Learners Make When Counting in Japanese</h2>

Even advanced learners trip over these errors:

<ol>
<li>Using the wrong counter for the object: Saying hon o ippon (one book using the long-object counter) instead of hon o is-satsu (one book using the book counter). Books are bound, not cylindrical, so they take -satsu.</li>
<li>Forgetting the irregular forms: One person is hitori, not ichi-nin. Two people is futari, not ni-nin. These are exceptions you just have to memorize.</li>
<li>Mispronouncing the sound changes: Three long objects is san-bon, not san-hon. One animal is ippiki, not ichi-hiki. These shifts follow patterns but require listening practice to internalize.</li>
<li>Skipping the counter entirely: Saying ringo ga san (apples are three) sounds incomplete. You need ringo ga san-ko (three apples).</li>
<li>Confusing counters with similar meanings: -hon is for long objects, -satsu is for books, and -mai is for flat things. A notebook could be -satsu if bound or -mai if it's loose sheets—context matters.</li>
</ol>

The best way to avoid these mistakes is repetition and real-world exposure. Practice counting objects around you: pens on your desk, books on your shelf, people in a photo. For verb practice that often appears in counting sentences, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-verbs">Japanese Verbs: Types, Conjugation Rules, and Common Examples</a>.

<h2>Practical Ways to Practice Counting in Japanese</h2>

Start by counting objects in your daily life. Pick up your phone and say keitai ga ichi-dai (one mobile phone). Look at your bookshelf and count hon ga go-satsu (five books). Make it a habit to narrate quantities in Japanese as you encounter them.

Flashcards work well for drilling counters. Write the counter on one side and example sentences on the other. Our guide on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-to-use-japanese-flashcards-effectively">How to Use Japanese Flashcards Effectively for Grammar</a> shows you how to structure your review sessions for maximum retention.

Try shadowing native speakers. Watch Japanese cooking shows and repeat when the host says tamago ni-ko (two eggs) or ninjin ip-pon (one carrot). This trains your ear to the natural rhythm of counters in context.

Build counting into your daily study routine. Even 10 minutes a day makes a difference. For a complete study plan, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/daily-japanese-study-routine">Building a Daily Japanese Study Routine That Sticks</a>. And if you're wondering how long it takes to get comfortable with counters, check out <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-long-to-learn-japanese">How Long to Learn Japanese: A Realistic Timeline</a>—most learners feel confident with basic counters within two to three months of consistent practice.

<h2>Using Counters in Real Japanese Conversations</h2>

Here's how counting sounds in everyday situations:

At a restaurant:
Customer: Biiru o ni-hon kudasai. (Two beers, please.)
Server: Kashikomarimashita. Biiru ni-hon desu ne. (Certainly. Two beers, right?)

Shopping for stationery:
You: Kono pen, ikko ikura desu ka? (How much is one of these pens?)
Clerk: Ikko san-byaku en desu. (One is 300 yen.)

Talking about family:
Friend: Kyoudai wa nan-nin imasu ka? (How many siblings do you have?)
You: Futari imasu. Ani ga hitori to imouto ga hitori. (I have two. One older brother and one younger sister.)

Notice how counters flow naturally into the sentence structure. They're not an afterthought—they're integral to clear communication. <h2>Counting in Japanese for JLPT Success</h2>

The JLPT tests counting heavily, especially at N5 and N4 levels. You'll see questions asking you to choose the correct counter for a given noun, fill in blanks in listening dialogues about quantities, and read passages that include numbers and counters.

N5 expects you to know numbers 1–100, basic counters like -nin, -ko, -hon, -mai, -satsu, -dai, and -hiki, plus time expressions. N4 adds counters for floors (-kai), age (-sai), and frequency (-do).

Practice with our <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-n5-practice-test">JLPT N5 Practice Test: Free Mock Exam with Answers</a> to see how counters appear in exam contexts. For a complete study plan covering all N5 grammar including counting, see <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/jlpt-prep/jlpt-n5-grammar-guide-for-beginners">JLPT N5 Grammar Guide: Every Pattern for Beginners</a>.

If you're preparing for N3, counters combine with more complex grammar patterns. Check out <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-n3-grammar">JLPT N3 Grammar and Study Guide: What to Learn After N4</a> for the next level of counting expressions.

<h2>Moving Forward with Your Counting Skills</h2>

Counting in Japanese takes practice, but it's one of those skills that unlocks so much of the language. Once you can confidently say how many of something there are, you'll find yourself understanding conversations better, ordering food more easily, and sounding natural in everyday situations.

Start with the seven core counters listed above, then gradually add more as you encounter them. Don't stress about memorizing all 500-plus counters—focus on the ones you'll actually use. Pay attention to how native speakers count in videos, podcasts, and real conversations. Notice the rhythm, the sound changes, and how counters fit into the sentence flow.

Most importantly, practice out loud. Your mouth needs to get used to the combinations of sounds, especially the tricky rendaku shifts. Count objects around you, narrate your day in Japanese, and drill flashcards with audio.

With consistent practice, counting in Japanese will become automatic—and you'll wonder why it ever seemed complicated. <h1>Japanese Counters Made Simple: Complete List with Practice Quiz</h1>

 Japanese counters are the small words that tell you what you are counting: people, books, bottles, machines, animals, and more. Learn the most useful counters in groups, memorize their sound changes, and practise them in short sentences instead of attacking one giant list.

 Japanese counters are grammatical words used after a number to classify the thing being counted. English usually says three books, but Japanese says 本を三冊, hon o sansatsu, literally books three-counter. The counter is not decoration: it carries information about the object.

 Here is the good news: you do not need to master every counter at once. Start with つ, 人, 個, 本, 枚, 冊, 台, and 匹. Those eight cover a huge amount of beginner Japanese. Then add time, floors, frequency, and specialised counters as your reading grows. If numbers themselves feel shaky, review this <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers-from-1-to-10">Japanese numbers 1 to 10 guide</a> first.

 <h2>How do Japanese counters work?</h2>

 The basic pattern is:

 number + counter

 For example:

 <ul>
 <li>りんごを三つ買いました。 Ringo o mittsu kaimashita. — I bought three apples.</li>
 <li>学生が二人います。 Gakusei ga futari imasu. — There are two students.</li>
 <li>本を五冊読みました。 Hon o gosatsu yomimashita. — I read five books.</li>
 </ul>

 The counter usually follows the number and comes before particles such as を, が, に, or あります. In a question, 何, nani or nan, combines with a counter: 何人, nan-nin, means how many people, while 何冊, nan-satsu, means how many books.

 Japanese counters also change pronunciation. This is where learners often trip: 一本 is ippon, not ichi-hon, and 三本 is sanbon, not san-hon. Think of the counter as a shape-shifter. The meaning stays stable, but the sound adapts to the number beside it.

 For a wider overview of number pronunciation, writing, and everyday use, keep the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers">complete Japanese numbers guide</a> nearby. Counters become much easier when the numbers themselves are automatic.

 <h2>The essential Japanese counters for beginners</h2>

 <h3>1. つ: general objects from 1 to 10</h3>

 The counter つ is the beginner-friendly all-purpose option for many physical things. It is especially useful when you do not know, or do not need, a more specific counter. However, つ is normally used only up to 10. It is not a licence to count everything forever.

 <ul>
 <li>一つ — hitotsu — one</li>
 <li>二つ — futatsu — two</li>
 <li>三つ — mittsu — three</li>
 <li>四つ — yottsu — four</li>
 <li>五つ — itsutsu — five</li>
 <li>六つ — muttsu — six</li>
 <li>七つ — nanatsu — seven</li>
 <li>八つ — yattsu — eight</li>
 <li>九つ — kokonotsu — nine</li>
 <li>十 — tō — ten</li>
 </ul>

 Example: ケーキを三つください。Kēki o mittsu kudasai. — Three cakes, please. Notice that the native readings are irregular. They are worth learning as one compact chant: hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu, yottsu.

 <h3>2. 人: people</h3>

 Use 人, nin, for people. Most numbers are predictable: 三人 is san-nin, four people is 四人, yon-nin, and five people is 五人, go-nin. The first two are special:

 <ul>
 <li>一人 — hitori — one person</li>
 <li>二人 — futari — two people</li>
 <li>三人 — sannin — three people</li>
 <li>四人 — yonin — four people</li>
 </ul>

 Example: パーティーに六人来ました。Pātī ni roku-nin kimashita. — Six people came to the party. Do not say ichi-nin for one person or ni-nin for two people. Those forms are classic beginner traps.

 <h3>3. 個: small, compact objects</h3>

 個, ko, counts individual small items such as eggs, boxes, pieces of fruit, and sweets. It is a practical alternative when a more specific counter is unnecessary.

 <ul>
 <li>一個 — ikko — one</li>
 <li>二個 — niko — two</li>
 <li>三個 — sanko — three</li>
 <li>四個 — yonko — four</li>
 <li>五個 — goko — five</li>
 <li>六個 — rokko — six</li>
 <li>八個 — hakko — eight</li>
 </ul>

 Example: 卵を六個買いました。Tamago o rokko kaimashita. — I bought six eggs. The doubled consonant in ikko, rokko, and hakko deserves attention. Say it crisply, like a tiny drumbeat: i-kko.

 <h3>4. 本: long, cylindrical objects</h3>

 本, hon, counts long, narrow objects: bottles, umbrellas, pencils, trees, and bananas. It does not mean book in this use, even though 本 can also mean book as a noun.

 The important sound pattern is:

 <ul>
 <li>一本 — ippon — one</li>
 <li>二本 — nihon — two</li>
 <li>三本 — sanbon — three</li>
 <li>四本 — yonhon — four</li>
 <li>五本 — gohon — five</li>
 <li>六本 — roppon — six</li>
 <li>八本 — happon — eight</li>
 <li>十本 — juppon — ten</li>
 </ul>

 Example: 水を二本お願いします。Mizu o nihon onegaishimasu. — Two bottles of water, please. Remember the mini-story: one bottle punches the counter into ippon; three makes it bounce into bon; six doubles the beat into roppon.

 <h3>5. 枚: flat and thin objects</h3>

 枚, mai, counts flat items such as sheets of paper, tickets, shirts, plates, and photographs. This one is beautifully regular:

 <ul>
 <li>一枚 — ichimai — one</li>
 <li>二枚 — nimai — two</li>
 <li>三枚 — sanmai — three</li>
 <li>四枚 — yonmai — four</li>
 <li>五枚 — gomai — five</li>
 </ul>

 Example: チケットを二枚買いました。Chiketto o nimai kaimashita. — I bought two tickets. Imagine every ticket as a thin sheet floating like a leaf. Flat equals mai.

 <h3>6. 冊: bound books and magazines</h3>

 冊, satsu, counts bound volumes: books, notebooks, manga, and magazines. It is one of the most useful counters for reading practice.

 <ul>
 <li>一冊 — issatsu — one book</li>
 <li>二冊 — nisatsu — two books</li>
 <li>三冊 — sansatsu — three books</li>
 <li>四冊 — yonsatsu — four books</li>
 <li>八冊 — hassatsu — eight books</li>
 </ul>

 Example: 毎月、本を二冊読みます。Maigetsu, hon o nisatsu yomimasu. — I read two books every month. For more support with book-related sentences, practise alongside these <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-practice">beginner Japanese reading passages</a>.

 <h3>7. 台: machines and vehicles</h3>

 台, dai, counts machines and vehicles: cars, computers, televisions, bicycles, and printers.

 車が二台あります。Kuruma ga ni-dai arimasu. — There are two cars.

 Unlike 本 and 個, 台 is mostly kind to your pronunciation. That makes it a useful confidence-building counter after the more irregular patterns.

 <h3>8. 匹, 羽, and 頭: animals</h3>

 Japanese divides animals by type and size:

 <ul>
 <li>匹, hiki — small animals such as cats, dogs, fish, and insects</li>
 <li>羽, wa — birds and rabbits</li>
 <li>頭, tō — large animals such as horses, cows, and elephants</li>
 </ul>

 Examples include 猫が三匹います, neko ga san-biki imasu, there are three cats; 鳥が二羽います, tori ga ni-wa imasu, there are two birds; and 馬が一頭います, uma ga ittō imasu, there is one horse.

 匹 has sound changes similar to 本: 一匹 is ippiki, 三匹 is sanbiki, and 六匹 is roppiki. The animal has not changed size; the pronunciation has simply put on a ninja disguise.

 <h2>Useful counters for time, frequency, and places</h2>

 Once the object counters feel comfortable, add these high-frequency choices:

 <ul>
 <li>回, kai: number of times. 三回, san-kai, three times.</li>
 <li>階, kai: floors of a building. 四階, yon-kai, fourth floor. In some accents, 七階 may be nan-kai or nana-kai.</li>
 <li>歳, sai: age. 二十歳 is hatachi, meaning 20 years old, an important irregular form.</li>
 <li>分, fun/pun: minutes. 五分 is go-fun, but 十分 is juppun, ten minutes.</li>
 <li>日, nichi/ka: days or dates. 一日 may be tsuitachi for the first day of a month, or ichinichi for one full day.</li>
 <li>か月, kagetsu: duration in months. 三か月, san-kagetsu, three months.</li>
 <li>年, nen: years or school years. 三年, san-nen, three years.</li>
 </ul>

 Context decides the meaning. 三回 means three times, while 三階 means the third floor. They sound alike, so listen for surrounding words. If you are building broader grammar confidence, the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-particles">Japanese particles guide</a> can help you see how counters fit into complete sentences.

 <h2>Japanese counters: a memory system that works</h2>

 Do not memorise a counter as an isolated translation. Attach it to a visual category and a sentence. Here is the Kanji Ninja method:

 <ol>
 <li>Choose a category. Picture a flat ticket for 枚, a long bottle for 本, or a bound manga volume for 冊.</li>
 <li>Learn three anchor numbers. Start with one, three, and six. These expose many sound changes: ippon, sanbon, roppon.</li>
 <li>Say a useful sentence aloud. For example, 水を一本ください。Mizu o ippon kudasai. — One bottle of water, please.</li>
 <li>Test both directions. See 三冊 and produce sansatsu; hear sanbiki and identify three small animals.</li>
 <li>Review in spaced bursts. Five minutes today, tomorrow, three days later, and one week later beats one exhausting memorisation session.</li>
 </ol>

 Flashcards work best when they test a situation, not just a translation. One card might show three bottles and ask for the Japanese phrase. Another might show 三枚 and ask what kind of object fits. This approach turns recognition into recall. For a practical review routine, see these tips on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-to-use-japanese-flashcards-effectively">using Japanese flashcards effectively</a>.

 <h2>Quick practice quiz: choose the right counter</h2>

 Cover the answers first. Your mission: choose the counter and read the complete phrase.

 <ol>
 <li>Two people: 人, 枚, or 冊?</li>
 <li>Three books: 本, 冊, or 台?</li>
 <li>One umbrella: 本, 匹, or 個?</li>
 <li>Four tickets: 枚, 人, or 羽?</li>
 <li>Six cats: 匹, 台, or 頭?</li>
 <li>Two computers: 台, 冊, or 本?</li>
 <li>Five times: 回, 階, or 歳?</li>
 <li>Eight general objects: つ, 人, or 冊?</li>
 </ol>

 <h3>Answers and pronunciation</h3>

 <ol>
 <li>二人, futari — two people.</li>
 <li>三冊, sansatsu — three books.</li>
 <li>一本, ippon — one umbrella.</li>
 <li>四枚, yonmai — four tickets.</li>
 <li>六匹, roppiki — six cats.</li>
 <li>二台, ni-dai — two computers.</li>
 <li>五回, go-kai — five times.</li>
 <li>八つ, yattsu — eight general objects.</li>
 </ol>

 Score 8 out of 8? Excellent—now make each answer a sentence. Score 5 to 7? You have the system; review the sound changes. Score 0 to 4? No problem. Return to the core eight counters and build your next small win. You can also use Yuzunihon’s <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/quizzes">Japanese grammar quizzes</a> for additional retrieval practice.

 <h2>How Japanese counters help with JLPT preparation</h2>

 Counters appear in vocabulary questions, listening dialogues, reading passages, shopping situations, schedules, and everyday announcements. A learner who knows the number but misses the counter may misunderstand whether the speaker means people, books, minutes, or floors.

 For JLPT N5, prioritise つ, 人, 個, 本, 枚, 冊, 台, 匹, 回, and the basic time counters. As you move toward N4 and N3, collect counters from real sentences rather than memorising a disconnected catalogue. Track the counter, its reading, its category, and one example sentence in your notes. The <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-preparation">JLPT preparation guide</a> can help you organise that study, while the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-comprehension">Japanese reading comprehension exercises</a> give you a chance to meet counters in context.

 Most importantly, read counters aloud. Japanese sound changes become much easier when your mouth has practised them: ippon, sanbon, roppon; ikko, sanko, rokko; ippiki, sanbiki, roppiki. Rhythm is memory wearing sneakers.

 <h2>Final takeaway</h2>

 Japanese counters look intimidating because they classify the world in more detail than English does. In practice, they are a set of reusable patterns. Learn the object category, watch for pronunciation changes, and attach every new counter to a sentence you could genuinely say.

 Start today with one small mission: count five objects around you in Japanese. Then turn each answer into a sentence. Small counters, big progress.

Japanese numbers from 1 to 10 are the first counting words almost every beginner learns. They come in two everyday systems, Sino-Japanese readings like ichi and native readings like hitotsu, and you need both at a cafe counter.
A counter is a classifying word that sits next to a number and tells the listener what kind of thing is being counted. The general counter つ goes with the native set, while 円 for yen, 時 for hours, and 番 for platform numbers go with the Sino-Japanese set. Mix the two families and the sentence still might be understood, but it will sound like a textbook that slipped.
Think of it as two menus on the same table. One menu is short, warm, and stops at ten. The other menu runs forever and shows up on receipts, timetables, and phone numbers. Japan uses both, often in the same conversation, and the choice is a habit more than a rule you have to derive from scratch.

<h2>Japanese Numbers from 1 to 10: Two Readings, One Kanji</h2>
Each numeral from one to ten has a single everyday kanji and at least two spoken lives. The Sino-Japanese column is the one borrowed from Chinese centuries ago. The native column is the older Japanese way of counting loose objects. You will write the kanji the same way either time. What changes is the reading, and sometimes the hiragana ending.
If hiragana still feels shaky, pause with a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-kana">hiragana and katakana basics guide</a> before you drill these words. The small っ in みっつ and よっつ is not decoration. It is a real sound: a clipped pause that doubles the following consonant. Skip it and 三つ (mittsu, three things) collapses toward something a clerk cannot quite catch over the espresso machine.
Katakana is the odd one out here. You will rarely write イチ or ヒトツ unless a menu is being playful, a sports scoreboard is shouting, or a product code needs a Japanese syllable. Day to day, numbers appear as kanji, as Arabic digits (1, 2, 3), or as hiragana in children's books and beginner textbooks. Learning all three shapes of the same ten words is enough for travel and for N5.

<h3>How do you write and pronounce Japanese numbers 1-10 in hiragana and kanji?</h3>
Read the Sino-Japanese column when you see a price, a time, a date, a floor, or any number past ten. Read the native column when you are counting generic items up to ten with つ, especially food and drink. The kanji 一, 二, and 三 are also a stroke-count trick: one stroke, two strokes, three strokes. After that the shapes stop being so kind, so the table is worth copying by hand once.
<table>
<thead>

</thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>1</td><td>一</td><td>ichi</td><td>いち</td><td>hitotsu</td><td>ひとつ</td></tr>

</table>
A few sounds need a second pass. じゅう has a long uu; cutting it short makes ten sound like a different word. ここのつ is the clumsy one, and even native speakers sometimes pause before it. とお is the native ten, and it does not take つ. Saying too-tsu is a classic beginner slip. For the longer story of zero, hundreds, and counters beyond this set, the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japan-numerals">guide from zero to everyday counting</a> picks up where this table stops.

<h2>When should I use hitotsu instead of ichi?</h2>
Use the native set, hitotsu through too, in three everyday pockets. First, counting general objects from 1 to 10 when you do not have a more specific counter in mind: cakes, coffees, onigiri, tickets you are holding up. Second, ordering in a casual shop where the item is obvious: 一つください (hitotsu kudasai) means "one, please," and it is perfectly polite with ください. Third, asking a small child's age. おいくつですか uses this same つ series, and parents answer みっつ or よっつ far more often than a stiff Sino-Japanese age.
Use ichi, ni, san, and the rest of that column almost everywhere else. Phone numbers, room numbers, prices in 円, dates, hours, and every quantity from 11 upward belong here. Native counting in ordinary speech effectively stops at 10. There is an old word for 20, hatachi, but that is an age word, not a way to order twenty coffees. Ask for eleven pastries and you have already left hitotsu behind.
The same split shows up in age versus objects. An adult says 二十五歳 (nijuugosai), built on the Sino-Japanese 二十五 plus the counter 歳. A toddler is 三つ (mittsu). If you tell a cafe owner you are hitotsu years old, you have just announced that you are one, which is charming only if it is true.
<ul>
<li>Generic things, 1 to 10: native plus つ. コーヒーを二つください。</li>
<li>Money, time, platforms, phone digits: Sino-Japanese. 三百二十円、三番線、090...</li>
<li>11 and above, even for cakes: Sino-Japanese plus a counter. 十一個、十二本。</li>
<li>People are irregular: 一人 (hitori), 二人 (futari), then 三人 (sannin). Do not say hitotsu for a person.</li>
<li>Flat things like paper or tickets prefer 枚 (mai): 三枚, not mittsu, once you know the counter.</li>
</ul>
That last pair is why numbers and grammar travel together. A counter is not optional decoration once you leave the cafe's "one of those, please." The <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-numbers">page on reading and using Japanese numbers</a> lays out the counters you will meet next, and the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/jlpt-prep/jlpt-n5-grammar-guide-for-beginners">JLPT N5 grammar guide</a> is where counters first sit inside full exam sentences. N5 assumes you can hear 七時 and 二つ without mixing the columns.

<h2>Four, seven, and nine: the readings people quietly avoid</h2>
Three numerals in this tiny set have double readings, and the choice is cultural as much as grammatical. 四 can be yon or shi. Shi sounds like 死, the word for death, so hospitals, hotels, and gift counters often dodge it. Room numbers and floor buttons sometimes skip 4. In a cafe, order four coffees as 四つ (yottsu) or, with the cup counter, 四杯 (yonhai). Yon is the safe everyday reading. Shi still appears in fixed compounds, such as 四月 (shigatsu, April), so you cannot throw it away.
七 is nana or shichi. Nana wins in phone numbers, prices, and most counters because it is easier to hear. Shichi shows up in 七時 (shichiji, seven o'clock) and in some older set phrases. If a station announcement says shichi and you only drilled nana, you will miss your train. Learn both, and let nana be your default when you are the one speaking.
九 is kyuu or ku. Ku can echo 苦, suffering, so kyuu is the reading people reach for in counters and in 九時 (kuji is actually the common reading for nine o'clock — yes, this one prefers ku). The exceptions are why a list of ten words takes longer than an afternoon. There are two readings you will actively choose for 4 and 7, and a traditional preference that pushes kyuu over ku in many counters. None of this is superstition you must perform. It is just why yon and nana feel friendlier at the register.
Pitch accent differs by region, and Tokyo speech is only one option. For a first trip or an N5 listening section, a clear vowel matters more than a perfect accent. Stretch the long vowels in じゅう and きゅう. Keep the doubled consonant in みっつ, よっつ, むっつ, やっつ. Those four words are where most beginners get marked down, not on the kanji.

<h2>A cafe conversation you can steal tomorrow</h2>
Picture a small kissaten, not a chain. You want two coffees and three little cakes. The clerk does not need a speech. She needs a number she can hear, a particle that marks the object, and a request form.
You: コーヒーを二つください。Koohii o futatsu kudasai.
Clerk: 二つですね。Futatsu desu ne.
You: それから、ケーキを三つお願いします。Sorekara, keeki o mittsu onegaishimasu.
Clerk: 全部で千二百円です。Zenbu de sen-nihyaku-en desu.
Notice the handoff. Your quantities stayed native, because two coffees and three cakes are generic counted things under ten. Her total jumped to Sino-Japanese, because 1,200 yen is money. 千二百 is sen-nihyaku, not "too and something." That switch, inside four lines, is the whole system working.
Etiquette is lighter than people fear. ください is polite enough for a cafe. お願いします is a touch softer and very natural when you add a second item. You do not need both hands and a bow to pass a 1,000-yen note at a counter, though placing the coins down rather than dropping them into the palm is a small kindness. If you mishear the total, repeat the number as a question: 千二百円ですか。Clerks expect this. Guessing and then looking shocked at the receipt is the move that creates the awkward pause.
Pointing at the case is fine if your number is weak. Pair the point with the word: これを二つ. これ is "this," and it saves you when the pastry has a name you cannot read yet. Travel Japanese is full of these rescue lines. A <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-travel-phrases">grammar-leaning set of travel phrases</a> is worth keeping beside this number list, because the number is rarely the whole sentence.
One more counter you will meet before you finish the cup. Cups of drink often take 杯 (hai): 一杯 (ippai), 二杯 (nihai), 三杯 (sanbai). The reading of 杯 changes, which is annoying and normal. If that feels like too much on day one, stay with つ. コーヒーを二つ is understood in any shop in the country. Upgrade to 杯 when you want to sound a little more precise, not before.

<h2>How numbers sit inside a real sentence</h2>
Japanese is an SOV language, so the verb closes the sentence and the quantity usually rides in the middle. A clean pattern for the cafe is noun を quantity ください. ケーキを三つください. You can also float the quantity earlier: 三つケーキをください is heard, though the noun-を-quantity order is the one to trust while you are new. Word order is flexible about the topic, not about the verb coming last. If that still feels slippery, <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/understanding-japanese-sentence-structure">how Japanese sentence structure actually works</a> is the calmer explanation.
Particles do the labeling. を marks the thing you are ordering. が shows up when you are saying something exists: ケーキが三つあります, "there are three cakes." Beginners often swap は and が here and end up talking about cakes in general instead of these three cakes. The short <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/japanese-particles-wa-and-ga">explanation of wa and ga</a> and the broader <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-particles">particle guide for N5 and N4</a> both use number sentences as examples, which makes them easy to review on the same afternoon as this list.
A few mistakes show up so often they are almost a rite of passage. People invent ichi-tsu or san-tsu by bolting a Sino-Japanese stem onto つ. People say too-tsu for ten. People use hitori logic on coffee and call one cup 一人. People read every 四 as shi, including "four please," and get a blink in return. None of these are moral failures. They are the same family of slips collected in notes on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/top-10-japanese-grammar-mistakes">common Japanese grammar mistakes</a>, and they fade once you hear the two columns as separate habits rather than as one blended list.

<h2>A ten-minute way to make the list stick</h2>
Copy the table by hand, kanji and both hiragana columns. Say each pair out loud: ichi, hitotsu, ni, futatsu. Then cover the native column and only look at the kanji. The goal is not speed on day one. It is stopping yourself before you answer 三 with san when the sentence is about cakes.
Build two tiny drills, not one giant one. Drill A is prices and times, Sino-Japanese only: 350円 (sanbyaku-gojuu-en), 7:10 (shichi-ji juu-pun — and yes, 分 changes shape too). Drill B is ordering, native only, from 一つ to とお. Mixing the drills in the same minute is how the columns glue together wrongly. <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/how-to-use-japanese-flashcards-effectively">Flashcards aimed at grammar patterns</a> work well if one side is a full phrase, りんごを四つ, and not a bare numeral. A bare "4" can be yon, shi, or yottsu, so the card has to tell you which life it is living.
Read one short passage that contains both systems. A receipt line plus a dialogue is enough. Beginner <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-practice">reading practice with grammar notes</a> and slightly longer <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-reading-comprehension">reading comprehension exercises</a> both sneak numbers into ordinary prose, which is where they stop feeling like a chart. When you want a score, an <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/jlpt-n5-practice-test">N5 practice test</a> will ask you to catch 九時 and 二つ under time pressure. That is a fair test of this page.
Keep the session small enough to repeat. Ten focused minutes inside a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/study-tips/daily-japanese-study-routine">daily study routine</a> beats a single Sunday of copying the chart until your hand cramps. If you are still mapping the whole beginner path, the <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/uncategorized/japanese-lessons-for-beginners">step-by-step beginner roadmap</a> and the notes on <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/grammar-guides/how-to-start-learning-japanese-grammar">getting started with grammar practice</a> show where numbers belong: early, beside particles, before you worry about N3 patterns.
Once ten feels dull, move outward on purpose. Learn ゼロ or 零 for zero, then the tens (二十 nijuu, 三十 sanjuu), and only then the counters 人, 本, and 枚. The <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/blogs/japanese-numbers">longer walkthrough of how to read and write numbers</a> is the natural next chapter, and a <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/quizzes">short grammar quiz</a> is a painless way to check that を and the quantity are still in the right place after you add those counters.

<h2>What to keep in your pocket</h2>
You now have ten kanji, two readings for most of them, and a simple rule of thumb. Native words with つ cover loose objects from 1 to 10. Sino-Japanese words cover money, time, labels, and everything from 11 up. Four prefers yon in speech, seven often prefers nana, and nine o'clock is the famous exception that likes ku.
Before your next coffee, rehearse three lines and nothing else: 一つください, 二つお願いします, and 三千円ですか. Those three cover a purchase, a second item, and a check of the total. The chart can stay in your notebook. The lines should be in your mouth.
If a number past ten appears on a platform sign or a bill, do not reach for hitotsu. Switch columns, say the Sino-Japanese reading, and let the counter do the classifying. That single habit is what makes Japanese numbers from 1 to 10 useful instead of decorative, and it is the habit every later counter is built on.
