The good news: Japanese adjectives are one of the most learnable grammar pillars in the language. There are only two types, they follow four predictable conjugation patterns, and once you can tell them apart at a glance, a whole layer of sentences unlocks.

 Every Japanese adjective belongs to one of two families. They behave differently in nearly every sentence you build, so classification has to come first.

 Here's the mnemonic I give every student: "い-adjectives wear their い like a name tag. な-adjectives borrow the な only when they meet a noun." That second half matters — な is not part of the word. It's a connector that shows up when the adjective attaches to a noun: 静かな部屋 (shizuka na heya, a quiet room).

 And the trap list? Memorize these five as な-adjectives right now, because they look like い-adjectives but aren't:

 きれい (kirei)・嫌い (kirai)・有名 (yuumei)・便利 (benri)・元気 (genki)

 Notice how none of them are written with the kanji い. 嫌い has an い in hiragana hanging off the kanji 嫌, and きれい is usually written in kana. If the い is not the actual okurigana of a kanji — like the し in おいしい or the い in 高い — treat it as suspicious.

 Picture a quiet, famous, beautiful, healthy person who hates convenience stores. That's 静か, 有名, きれい, 元気, 嫌い — all な-adjectives napping in disguise. Silly? Yes. Sticky? Also yes, and that's the point.

 The classic error is keeping the い and adding です: 高いですない doesn't exist. Also note that です can follow a plain い-adjective for politeness (高いです is fine), but です does not carry the negative or past — the adjective does that itself.

 <h3>な-adjectives</h3>

 These hold still. The adjective itself never changes; the endings do all the work, and だ/です behaves like a verb:

 Mnemonic: "い-adjectives are shape-shifters. な-adjectives are statues — only the pedestal changes."

 <h2>Quick Drill: Classify and Conjugate</h2>

 Cover the answers. Do this in under two minutes.

 <ol>
 <li>新しい (atarashii, new) — type and past negative?</li>
 <li>便利 (benri, convenient) — type and present negative (polite)?</li>
 <li>おいしい (oishii, delicious) — type and past affirmative?</li>
 <li>きれい (kirei, pretty) — type and past negative (casual)?</li>
 <li>忙しい (isogashii, busy) — type and present negative?</li>
 </ol>

 Answers: 1) い-adjective → 新しくなかった. 2) な-adjective → 便利ではありません. 3) い-adjective → おいしかった. 4) な-adjective → きれいじゃなかった. 5) い-adjective → 忙しくない.

 Missed #4? That's the な-Napper trap. Missed #2? Remember that な-adjectives use では/じゃ, never く. Run the drill again tomorrow — spaced repetition is what makes this automatic.

 <h2>The Two Irregulars (Yes, Only Two)</h2>

 Japanese is kind here. Only one adjective is truly irregular, plus one that looks odd:

 <li>いい (ii, good) — irregular. Past is よかった, negative is よくない, past negative is よくなかった. The stem switches to よ. Never say いかった.</li>

 That's it. No other common adjective breaks the pattern. Every other い-adjective is a shape-shifter you can trust.

 At these levels the exam tests whether you can slot the right form into a blank. Typical stem: 「昨日のテストは＿＿＿＿。」 with options like 難しかった / 難しいだった / 難しくないだった / 難しいでした. You need two skills fused — spotting that 昨日 requires past tense, and knowing い-adjectives form the past with かった, not だった.

 A common confusion is treating adjectives like verbs. They're similar but not identical. Verbs conjugate to 〜ない, 〜た, and 〜ます; い-adjectives conjugate to 〜くない and 〜かった, and never take <a href="https://yuzunihon.com/grammars/%E3%81%BE%E3%81%99">〜ます</a>.  な-adjectives, by contrast, are half-verb already: 静かだ conjugates almost exactly like だ/です, which is why 静かだった parallels 学生だった. Once you notice that parallel, な-adjectives stop feeling like a separate category and start feeling like nouns that describe.
