<p>Japanese verb conjugation is far more regular than most learners expect. There are only three groups, and two of them contain a handful of verbs between them. Once you can sort a verb into its group, the rest follows a fixed recipe.</p>
<p>This guide covers the groups, the two forms that matter most, and the patterns that sit on top of them.</p>

<h2>The three verb groups</h2>
<p>Every Japanese verb belongs to one of three groups. Sorting the verb is the first step of every conjugation.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Group 1</strong> — <em>u</em> verbs such as <em>nomu</em>, <em>kaku</em>, and <em>hanasu</em></li>
<li><strong>Group 2</strong> — <em>ru</em> verbs such as <em>taberu</em> and <em>miru</em></li>
<li><strong>Group 3</strong> — only <em>suru</em> and <em>kuru</em></li>
</ul>
<p>Group 3 is irregular, although it contains just two verbs. Therefore you can simply memorise them and move on.</p>

<h2>The polite form</h2>
<p>Start here, because it is safe in almost every situation. Group 2 verbs drop <em>ru</em> and add <em>masu</em>. Group 1 verbs change the final <em>u</em> sound to an <em>i</em> sound, then add <em>masu</em>.</p>
<p>For example, <em>taberu</em> becomes <em>tabemasu</em>, while <em>nomu</em> becomes <em>nomimasu</em>. Similarly, the past is <em>tabemashita</em> and <em>nomimashita</em>.</p>

<h2>The te form is the key to everything</h2>
<p>The <em>te</em> form does more work than any other form in Japanese verb conjugation. It links clauses, makes requests, and builds the progressive.</p>
<p>Group 2 is easy: drop <em>ru</em>, add <em>te</em>. Group 1 depends on the final sound.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>u</em>, <em>tsu</em>, <em>ru</em> → <em>tte</em></li>
<li><em>mu</em>, <em>bu</em>, <em>nu</em> → <em>nde</em></li>
<li><em>ku</em> → <em>ite</em>, and <em>gu</em> → <em>ide</em></li>
<li><em>su</em> → <em>shite</em></li>
</ul>
<p>Drill this until it is instant. Because dozens of later patterns attach to the <em>te</em> form, hesitation here slows everything down.</p>

<h2>The ta form follows the same rules</h2>
<p>Good news: the <em>ta</em> form uses exactly the same endings with <em>t</em> instead of <em>te</em>. So <em>nonde</em> becomes <em>nonda</em>, and <em>kaite</em> becomes <em>kaita</em>.</p>
<p>As a result, learning one form gives you the other for free.</p>

<h2>Patterns built on these forms</h2>
<p>Once the forms are solid, the patterns come quickly.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>~te kudasai</em> — please do</li>
<li><em>~te imasu</em> — is doing</li>
<li><em>~te mo ii</em> — may do</li>
<li><em>~ta koto ga aru</em> — have done before</li>
<li><em>~ta hou ga ii</em> — had better do</li>
</ul>

<h2>Negative and potential forms</h2>
<p>The plain negative ends in <em>nai</em>. The potential form says you can do something. For instance, <em>taberareru</em> means "can eat", whereas <em>nomeru</em> means "can drink".</p>

<h2>How to practise Japanese verb conjugation</h2>
<p>Conjugation is a speed skill. Therefore, practise against a clock rather than slowly.</p>

<li>Write ten verbs. Conjugate each into polite, <em>te</em>, and <em>ta</em> forms.</li>
<li>Time yourself, then repeat tomorrow.</li>
<li>Say each form aloud as you write it.</li>

Japanese Verb Conjugation: Te Form, Ta Form and More

<p>Learning Japanese grammar looks frightening on day one. The writing is new, the word order is reversed, and the textbooks are thick. However, Japanese grammar is far more regular than English grammar. There are fewer exceptions, verbs do not change for person, and there are no plurals to worry about. Once you see the pattern, the language starts to click.</p>
<p>This guide gives you a first month of learning Japanese grammar that actually works. First we cover word order. Next we cover the particles that hold sentences together. Finally we turn it into a routine you can keep.</p>

<h2>Why learning Japanese grammar feels hard at first</h2>
<p>English speakers expect the verb early. Japanese puts it last. Because of that, your brain has to hold the whole sentence before the meaning lands. This feels slow at the start. Nevertheless, it becomes automatic with practice.</p>
<p>The second surprise is particles. These are small words that mark the job of each noun. English uses word order for that job. Japanese uses particles instead, so word order can move around freely.</p>
<p>The third surprise is politeness. The same sentence has a casual form and a polite form. For example, <em>taberu</em> and <em>tabemasu</em> both mean "eat". Beginners should learn the polite form first, because it is safe in almost every situation.</p>

<h2>Step one: learn the sentence skeleton</h2>
<p>Japanese follows subject, object, verb order. In short, the action arrives at the end. Here is the pattern in its simplest form:</p>
<ul>
<li>watashi wa pan o tabemasu — I eat bread</li>
<li>tanaka san wa hon o yomimasu — Mr Tanaka reads a book</li>
<li>neko wa mizu o nomimasu — the cat drinks water</li>
</ul>
<p>Notice that each sentence ends with the verb. Notice also that the subject is often dropped when it is obvious. Japanese speakers leave out anything the listener already knows, so short sentences are normal and correct.</p>

<h2>Step two: the four particles that matter most</h2>
<p>Four particles carry most beginner sentences. Learn these before anything else.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>wa</strong> marks the topic. It tells the listener what you are talking about.</li>
<li><strong>ga</strong> marks the subject. It points at who or what performs the action.</li>
<li><strong>o</strong> marks the direct object. It shows what receives the action.</li>
<li><strong>ni</strong> marks a destination or a point in time.</li>
</ul>
<p>For instance, <em>gakkou ni ikimasu</em> means "I go to school". The particle <em>ni</em> is what makes school the destination. Change the particle and you change the meaning, although the words stay the same. <h2>Step three: build a four-week plan for learning Japanese grammar</h2>
<p>A plan beats motivation. Therefore, fix the schedule first and keep the sessions short.</p>
<h3>Week one</h3>
<p>Study word order and the four core particles. Write five sentences a day using only what you know. Keep them simple, because simple sentences build confidence.</p>
<h3>Week two</h3>
<p>Add the polite present and past forms, <em>masu</em> and <em>mashita</em>. Then rewrite last week's sentences in the past tense. This doubles your output without new vocabulary.</p>
<h3>Week three</h3>
<p>Add negatives and questions. Add the particle <em>ka</em> at the end to ask something. As a result, you can now hold a basic exchange.</p>
<h3>Week four</h3>
<p>Add adjectives and the <em>te</em> form. The <em>te</em> form connects clauses, so your sentences finally start to sound natural.</p>

<h2>How to practise so the grammar sticks</h2>
<p>Reading a rule is not the same as owning it. Consequently, you need output every single day. Three habits work well.</p>
<ul>
<li>Write five original sentences daily. Original means about your own life.</li>
<li>Read each sentence aloud. Speaking recruits a different kind of memory.</li>
<li>Review yesterday's sentences before you write new ones.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Mistakes that slow beginners down</h2>
<p>Several habits make learning Japanese grammar slower than it needs to be. First, do not memorise vocabulary lists in isolation. Words without grammar cannot become sentences. Second, do not skip the particles because they look small. They carry the meaning. Third, do not chase advanced patterns early, although they look impressive. Depth beats breadth in the first year.</p>
<p>Finally, do not study only by reading. Passive study feels productive, yet it fades quickly. Similarly, watching a video without writing anything down rarely sticks.</p>

<p>Once the basics feel steady, move to a structured level. How to Start Learning Japanese Grammar: A Beginner Guide

<p>JLPT N5 grammar is the foundation of the whole exam ladder. It covers the patterns you need for everyday conversation, and every higher level assumes you already own them. This guide lists what the test covers, in the order that makes learning easiest.</p>
<p>N5 is the entry level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Because the scope is fixed and published, it is the easiest level to prepare for completely.</p>

<h2>What JLPT N5 grammar actually covers</h2>
<p>The exam expects around one hundred patterns. That sounds like a lot. However, most of them are variations on a small number of ideas. Group them and the list shrinks fast.</p>
<ul>
<li>Particles and how they mark roles in a sentence</li>
<li>The copula, <em>desu</em> and <em>da</em></li>
<li>Polite verb forms in present, past, and negative</li>
<li>The <em>te</em> form and the patterns built on it</li>

<h2>Particles first</h2>
<p>Particles are the highest value item on the list. Learn <em>wa</em>, <em>ga</em>, <em>o</em>, <em>ni</em>, <em>de</em>, <em>to</em>, <em>mo</em>, <em>kara</em>, and <em>made</em>. For example, <em>de</em> marks where an action happens, while <em>ni</em> marks where you are going.</p>

<h2>Verb forms you must know</h2>
<p>N5 keeps verbs simple. You need four forms of every verb.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>tabemasu</em> — polite present or future</li>
<li><em>tabemashita</em> — polite past</li>
<li><em>tabemasen</em> — polite negative</li>
<li><em>tabemasen deshita</em> — polite past negative</li>
</ul>
<p>Next comes the <em>te</em> form, which is the single most useful form in the language. It links actions, makes requests, and forms the progressive. For instance, <em>tabete kudasai</em> means "please eat".</p>

<h2>The JLPT N5 grammar patterns that appear most</h2>
<p>Some patterns show up in almost every past paper. Learn these early.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>~te kara</em> — after doing something</li>
<li><em>~mae ni</em> — before doing something</li>
<li><em>~tai desu</em> — want to do something</li>
<li><em>~koto ga dekimasu</em> — can do something</li>
<li><em>~ta hou ga ii</em> — it is better to do something</li>
<li><em>~nakereba narimasen</em> — must do something</li>
</ul>
<p>Each one attaches to a specific verb form. Consequently, the verb forms above are not optional. Get them solid first and these patterns become easy.</p>

<h2>Adjectives at N5</h2>
<p>Japanese has two adjective types. <em>i</em> adjectives change their own ending. <em>na</em> adjectives need the copula instead. For example, <em>takai desu</em> becomes <em>takakunai desu</em> in the negative, although <em>shizuka desu</em> becomes <em>shizuka ja arimasen</em>.</p>
<p>This split confuses beginners for a while. Nevertheless, there are only two groups, so it is quickly learned.</p>

<h2>A study order that works</h2>
<h3>Month one</h3>
<p>Particles and the polite verb forms. Nothing else. Write your own sentences daily.</p>
<h3>Month two</h3>
<p>The <em>te</em> form, adjectives, and question words. Then start reading very short passages.</p>
<h3>Month three</h3>
<p>The listed patterns above, plus timed practice. Moreover, start doing full sections under exam conditions.</p>

JLPT N5 Grammar Guide: Every Pattern for Beginners

<p>Most Japanese grammar mistakes are small. Nevertheless, they change meaning in ways that confuse listeners. The good news is that the same ten errors account for most of the trouble, and each one has a clear fix.</p>
<p>Work through this list slowly. For each item, write two correct sentences of your own before moving on.</p>

<h2>1. Confusing wa and ga</h2>
<p>This is the most common of all Japanese grammar mistakes. <em>Wa</em> introduces the topic, while <em>ga</em> points at the subject. Use <em>ga</em> for new information and <em>wa</em> for something already known. <h2>2. Dropping particles in writing</h2>
<p>Casual speech sometimes drops particles. However, written Japanese does not. Therefore, keep every particle in place until your ear is reliable.</p>

<h2>3. Overusing watashi</h2>
<p>English needs a subject in every sentence. Japanese does not. If the listener knows who you mean, leave it out. As a result, your Japanese immediately sounds more natural.</p>

<h2>4. Using the wrong negative form</h2>
<p>Beginners often mix the two adjective types. <em>Takai</em> becomes <em>takakunai</em>. However, <em>shizuka</em> becomes <em>shizuka ja nai</em>. Check which group the adjective belongs to first.</p>

<h2>5. Mixing polite and casual in one sentence</h2>
<p>Pick one register and stay in it. Mixing sounds jarring, although it is easy to do when you are tired. For example, do not follow <em>tabemasu</em> with a casual clause in the same breath.</p>

<h2>6. Translating "is" directly</h2>
<p>The copula <em>desu</em> is not the English verb "to be". It does not go with every adjective, and it never means "exists". Use <em>arimasu</em> or <em>imasu</em> for existence instead.</p>

<h2>7. Wrong counter words</h2>
<p>Japanese counts different objects with different words. Flat things use <em>mai</em>, long things use <em>hon</em>, and people use <em>nin</em>. Learn the five most common counters first, because the rest are rare in daily speech.</p>

<h2>8. Misplacing time expressions</h2>
<p>Time words usually come early in the sentence. In contrast, English often puts them at the end. Say <em>ashita gakkou ni ikimasu</em>, not the reverse.</p>

<h2>9. Overusing the te form</h2>
<p>The <em>te</em> form links clauses well. Nevertheless, three or four links in one sentence become hard to follow. Break long chains into two sentences instead.</p>

<h2>10. Word for word translation from English</h2>
<p>This causes more Japanese grammar mistakes than any single rule. English structure does not map onto Japanese structure. Consequently, you should learn whole patterns rather than words. <h2>How to stop repeating the same Japanese grammar mistakes</h2>
<p>Noticing an error is not the same as fixing it. Therefore, build a correction habit.</p>

<li>Keep an error notebook. Write the wrong version and the right one side by side.</li>
<li>Review it weekly. Most learners repeat a small set of errors.</li>
<li>Test yourself instead of rereading. Testing exposes what rereading hides.</li>

Top 10 Japanese Grammar Mistakes and How to Fix Them

<p>Wa and ga cause more confusion than any other pair in Japanese. Both can sit where English would put a subject. However, they do different jobs, and swapping them changes what the sentence emphasises.</p>
<p>This guide gives you four rules that cover almost every case you will meet in your first two years.</p>

<h2>The short version</h2>
<p><em>Wa</em> marks the topic. It says "here is what I am talking about". <em>Ga</em> marks the subject. It points at who or what performs the action.</p>
<p>Put differently, <em>wa</em> sets the frame and <em>ga</em> fills a slot. Because the frame is usually already known, <em>wa</em> tends to carry old information.</p>

<h2>Rule one: new information takes ga</h2>
<p>When you introduce something for the first time, use <em>ga</em>. Afterwards, switch to <em>wa</em>.</p>
<p>For example, <em>neko ga imasu</em> means "there is a cat" and announces it. Then <em>neko wa shiroi desu</em> means "the cat is white", because the cat is now known to both speakers.</p>

<h2>Rule two: questions and answers</h2>
<p>Question words always take <em>ga</em>, never <em>wa</em>. Say <em>dare ga kimashita ka</em> for "who came?". Similarly, the answer keeps <em>ga</em>, because the answer is the new information.</p>
<p>This rule alone resolves a large share of wa and ga errors, so it is worth memorising exactly as stated.</p>

<h2>Rule three: contrast takes wa</h2>
<p>When you compare two things, both take <em>wa</em>. For instance, <em>kohi wa suki desu ga, ocha wa suki ja arimasen</em> means "I like coffee, but I do not like tea".</p>
<p>Notice that the contrast is explicit. As a result, <em>wa</em> appears twice in the same sentence.</p>

<h2>Rule four: subordinate clauses take ga</h2>
<p>Inside a relative clause, the subject takes <em>ga</em> rather than <em>wa</em>. <em>Watashi ga katta hon</em> means "the book I bought". Although <em>wa</em> feels natural to beginners here, it is wrong.</p>
<p>The reason is structural. <em>Wa</em> operates on the whole sentence, whereas the clause is only part of it. Therefore it cannot reach inside.</p>

<h2>A quick test when you are stuck</h2>
<p>Ask yourself one question: is this the thing I am talking about, or the thing I am identifying? Talking about means <em>wa</em>. Identifying means <em>ga</em>.</p>
<ul>
<li>Introducing something new — <em>ga</em></li>
<li>Answering "who" or "what" — <em>ga</em></li>
<li>Comparing two things — <em>wa</em></li>
<li>Inside a clause that modifies a noun — <em>ga</em></li>
</ul>

<h2>Practising wa and ga</h2>
<p>Reading the rules is not enough, because the choice has to happen at speaking speed. Drill it instead.</p>

Wa and Ga: The Japanese Particles Learners Confuse

<p>JLPT N4 grammar roughly doubles what you learned at N5. Nevertheless, it builds on exactly the same foundation, so the jump is smaller than the pattern count suggests.</p>
<p>This list groups every JLPT N4 grammar pattern by what it does. Grouping by function is far easier to remember than an alphabetical list.</p>

<h2>What changes between N5 and N4</h2>
<p>Three things change. First, the plain form becomes essential. Second, conditionals appear. Third, you meet the beginnings of polite honorific language.</p>

<h2>Conditionals</h2>
<p>N4 introduces four ways to say "if". They overlap, although each has its own flavour.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>~ba</em> — general condition</li>
<li><em>~tara</em> — the most flexible, common in speech</li>
<li><em>~nara</em> — given that something is the case</li>
<li><em>~to</em> — a natural or automatic result</li>
</ul>
<p>Learn <em>tara</em> first, because it covers most everyday situations. Then add the others one at a time.</p>

<h2>Giving and receiving</h2>
<p>This group trips up many candidates. <em>Ageru</em>, <em>kureru</em>, and <em>morau</em> all involve a transfer, yet the direction differs. Moreover, they combine with the <em>te</em> form to describe doing something for someone.</p>
<p>Draw the direction with arrows when you study these. As a result, the pattern becomes visual rather than abstract.</p>

<h2>Ability, intention and obligation</h2>
<ul>
<li><em>~koto ga dekiru</em> — can do</li>
<li>Potential verb forms — the shorter way to say the same thing</li>
<li><em>~tsumori</em> — intend to</li>
<li><em>~you to omou</em> — thinking of doing</li>
<li><em>~nakereba naranai</em> — must do</li>
<li><em>~nakute mo ii</em> — do not have to</li>
</ul>

<h2>Reporting and guessing</h2>
<p>N4 adds ways to report what you heard and to hedge a statement. <em>~sou desu</em> reports hearsay. <em>~you desu</em> and <em>~rashii</em> express appearance and likelihood. In contrast, <em>~kamo shirenai</em> is a weaker guess.</p>
<p>These appear constantly in the listening section, so practise them by ear as well as on paper.</p>

<h2>Passive and causative</h2>
<p>Two harder forms arrive at N4. The passive says something was done to the subject. The causative says someone made or let another person act. Furthermore, the two combine into the causative passive, which is common in real speech.</p>
<p>Take these slowly. They are the most common reason candidates fail an otherwise comfortable N4.</p>

<h2>A study order for the JLPT N4 grammar list</h2>
<h3>Weeks 1 to 3</h3>
<p>Plain form until it is automatic. Nothing else.</p>
<h3>Weeks 4 to 6</h3>

JLPT N4 Grammar List: Every Pattern You Need to Pass

<p>To prepare for the JLPT well, you need a plan rather than more hours. The exam is predictable. The scope is published, the question types repeat, and the timing is fixed. As a result, steady preparation beats last minute cramming every time.</p>
<p>This guide covers choosing a level, splitting your time, and the practice that actually moves your score. Follow it and you will prepare for the JLPT without guesswork.</p>

<h2>Choose the right level first</h2>
<p>There are five levels. N5 is the easiest and N1 is the hardest. Pick the level you can almost pass today, not the one you wish you could pass. Because the test has a section minimum, an over ambitious level often means failing on one section alone.</p>

<h2>Split your study time by section</h2>
<p>The exam tests vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening. However, most learners spend nearly all their time on grammar and vocabulary. That is a mistake, because reading and listening carry a large share of the marks.</p>

<p>Adjust the split after each practice test. For example, if listening is your weakest section, move ten percent there for a month.</p>

<p>Add daily reading. Start with short passages and build up. Meanwhile, keep grammar review going in short sessions.</p>

<h3>Month six</h3>
<p>Full mock exams every week. Then review only the questions you got wrong.</p>

<h2>Practise under real conditions</h2>
<p>Untimed practice hides your real weaknesses. Therefore, use a clock from month five onward. Sit the whole section in one go, without pausing, and mark it strictly.</p>
<p>Listening deserves special attention. It comes last, when you are tired, and it cannot be replayed. Consequently, daily listening beats occasional long sessions.</p>

<h2>Review the right way as you prepare for the JLPT</h2>
<p>Reviewing means understanding why an answer was wrong. Simply reading the correct option teaches very little. For each error, ask which pattern was tested and whether you knew it.</p>

<h2>Exam day</h2>
<p>Arrive early and bring the right identification. Do not leave blanks, because there is no penalty for a wrong answer. If a question stalls you, mark it and move on. Finally, watch the clock at the halfway point of each section.</p>

<h2>After the exam</h2>
<p>Results take about two months. Meanwhile, keep studying at the next level rather than stopping. Momentum is hard to rebuild once it is lost.</p>
